KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has seized jewellery worth RM3.64 million from two senior government officers here suspected of involvement in a multi-million ringgit graft case.
According to an MACC source, the first haul, confiscated from Sabah Water Department director Ag Mohd Tahir Mohd Talib, weighs 14.5kg and is estimated to be worth about RM2.74 million.
The second haul, seized from deputy Teo Chee Kong, comprised jewellery valued at RM900,000.
It is learnt that the MACC engaged a jewellery appraiser from Bank Rakyat to assess the value. The evaluation process began at 10.30am and ended at 12.15pm.
On Tuesday, the MACC apprehended the two senior officers and raided their office as well as houses and confiscated RM52 million in cash as well as jewellery, luxury vehicles, 127 land titles and 94 designer bags worth RM500,000.
The MACC also froze RM23 million in bank accounts belonging to the officers and their family members.
Following their arrests, Teo’s brother, who is a businessman with a Datuk title, and his accountant were nabbed. The MACC also froze RM37 million in a company bank account linked to the suspect.
As of Thursday, cash totalling RM3.3 million and jewellery (of undetermined value) were recovered from seven safety deposit boxes with assistance from banks.
