KUALA LUMPUR: The mother of an eight year-old girl who was chained to a pole at a playground in Bandar Sunway yesterday has had her police statement recorded.
Subang Jaya police chief assistant commissioner Mohammad Azlin Sadari said police were alerted of the incident at 6.35pm.
"A patrol car was deployed to the scene. As the team arrived, residents of the area had already gathered around the girl, who was chained to the pole.
"About 10 minutes later, the mother of the girl arrived and admitted to have chained her daughter," he said in a statement.
The girl was chained allegedly as punishment, as she often refused to go to school.
Azlin said the woman unchained her daughter on instructions from the police.
Both mother and daughter were taken to Subang Jaya police station for questioning.
An interrogation revealed that it was the first time the girl had been chained.
They were released after their statements were recorded.
The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for neglect and exposure of a child to physical injury.
