PUTRAJAYA: A 67-year-old man from Petaling Jaya, Selangor is the eighth confirmed Zika case in the country.
In a statement today, the Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the man, who initially sought treatment for fever, dizziness and diarrhoea on Nov 28, had tested negative for dengue.
On Dec 9, National Public Health Laboratory (MKAK) and Institute for Medical Research (IMR) confirmed that the man tested positive Zika, Dr Noor Hisham said.
“The patient’s movements from Nov 14 to Nov 28 had shown that he was in Kuala Lumpur, Shah Alam and Perak prior to the infection.
“Control measures including the destruction of mosquito breeding grounds (through) larviciding and fogging as well as health education was conducted at the patient’s residence and areas visited by the patient, on Dec 11,” he added.
Blood and urine samples have been taken from the patient’s family for testing as well, he added.
Malaysia’s first Zika patient was a 58-year-old woman in Klang, Selangor who tested positive for the disease a week after her return from Singapore on Aug 21.
The first local transmission case of Zika was reported in Sabah in September and the patient died from a heart complication.
The Zika virus can be transmitted through an infected Aedes mosquitoes, from mother to child, through sex and through blood transfusion.
