Tour boat and lorry catches fire, skipper suffers burns, lorry driver escapes harm

LANGKAWI: A boat skipper suffered burns when he was filling up fuel on a tour boat at Teluk Baharu Jetty in Pantai Tengah here today.

The victim, Rahman Ali, 46, from Kuala Temonyong, was rushed to the Langkawi Hospital following the 10.20am incident.

State Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Nur Hafizah Muhammad Lukman said members of the public had helped to put out the fire, which partly damaged the boat and another tour boat berthing next to it.

She said initial investigation revealed that the fire was caused by a spark when the victim was refuelling the boat.

Over in Simpang Pulai, a 12-tonne lorry transporting vegetables from Cameron Highlands here caught fire near SK Pos Raya last night.

A spokesman from the Simpang Pulai Fire and Rescue Department said the department was alerted of the incident at 7.06pm yesterday.

It was said when the firemen arrived, about 25 per cent of the lorry and the shipment it was carrying has been engulfed by the fire.

“We managed to control the fire in about 15 minutes. We were also assisted by a team of firemen from Ipoh,” he said, adding that the Ipoh team came with water tanks.

He added that no injury was reported as the lorry driver managed to escape in time. It was learnt that the lorry was heading to south during the incident.
