Q & A: Fahrin Ahmad

1. WHAT IS YOUR WEEKLY EXERCISE ROUTINE LIKE?

I cannot go a day without exercising. When I exercise, I always make sure that I do not either overdo or undertrain. I will go to the gym on alternate days for an hour of high-intensity workouts. And if I have free time, I will play football.

2. WHAT IS YOUR FITNESS AIM?

When I played rugby during my college years, my diet and fitness aim was mainly about muscle-building. Now, it is to lose weight and maintain a lean and healthy body. I want to be more agile. Rather than building bulky muscles, my focus now is on strength and endurance with a routine that suits my age and capability.

3. ARE YOU A GYM JUNKIE OR OUTDOOR EXERCISER?

I am a gym junkie, but sometimes I run in the park too.

4. HOW DO YOU GET OVER BEING TOO LAZY TO EXERCISE?

To avoid a boring routine, I make sure that it includes several types of exercise. I also make sure that it fits my busy schedule and I can commit to it. When I feel too lazy to exercise, I will try to push myself to do group activities such as playing football or at least do a basic stretching routine.

5. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE WORKOUT?

I actually love playing football and running is my current favourite too.

6. WEIGHTS OR CARDIO?

I have heavy muscles and I want to be leaner. So for now, I go for cardio.

7. WHAT IS THE MOST DRASTIC THING YOU HAVE DONE WHEN IT COMES TO EXERCISE?

In my current training, I can sprint up to 90 per cent of my maximum heart rate and I do that interval for 40 to 45 minutes. It is crazy and very tiring and I can only go to that extent when I do not have shooting schedules the next day.

In terms of diet, I stopped taking sugar since I was 19. My weight shot up to more than 100kg at that time following a knee injury, so I went cold turkey on sugar.

8. WHAT IS YOUR TYPICAL BREAKFAST?

I go for complex carbohydrates and eggs as well as a cup of coffee or green tea.

9. WHAT IS THE ONE JUNK FOOD YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT?

Keropok and kerepek (fish crackers and chips).

10. HOW LONG DO YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT?

I try to sleep for six hours every day. However, after a heavy workout, I can sleep up to eight hours.

11. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FITNESS APP / FITNESS TRACKER?

It is Polar Flow, very handy for real-time heart rate monitoring.

12. WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO AFTER YOU WAKE UP IN THE MORNING?

I take my supplements — multi-vitamins and vitamin C — first thing in the morning. I tend to fall sick easily without those supplements.
