MACC puts 16 cops in the dock for graft charges

KUALA LUMPUR: Sixteen police officers have been charged in four separate Sessions court today over various graft charges, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said in a statement.

The policemen were of various ranks, including a Deputy Superintendent, two Assistant Superintendents and two inspectors.

Eight of them were charged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court, four at the Kota Kinabalu Sessions Court, three at Shah Alam Sessions Court and one at Georgetown Sessions Court.

They were charged under Section 16 and 17 of the MACC Act and is punishable under Section 24 (1) of the same Act, which carries a jail term not exceeding 20 years or a fine of RM10,000 or five times the bribe amount, whichever is higher.

The anti-graft agency stressed that no party would be exempted from MACC’s investigations, including law enforcement agencies if they were found to be involved in acts of corruption.

“People hope that these law enforcement agencies would serve to protect them from any criminal threat, aside from maintaining peace and order in the country,” MACC said.
