Penang infant died of internal bleeding in the head: Police

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A post mortem carried out on the body of a 47-day-old baby girl, a suspected abuse victim, revealed that she died of internal bleeding in the head, the police said today.

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said external checks showed there were bruises, lacerations and scratches all over the infant's body.

“There were also abrasions on her private parts and bite marks on her hands.

“Internally, the autopsy revealed hemorrhaging and swelling on her head, and brain.

“There were also injuries on her lips followed by a fractured right rib and healing marks on her right arm. There was also a sign of a new fracture on her left thigh,” he said.

Nik Ros Azhan said the injuries could have been caused by blunt force trauma, pinching or throwing.

Earlier today, the parents of the baby girl were remanded for seven days to assist in police investigation.

The couple, both 22, were brought to the magistrate’s court here this morning. They were detained last night.

The remand order was issued by registrar Nor Hapipah Abdullah.

Yesterday, the baby girl died, after suspected abuse by her family, in Kampung Tok Panjang.

The parents said when the child fell unconscious, they rushed her to a nearby clinic, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Following the death, the child’s remains were taken to the Seberang Jaya Hospital and an X-ray revealed injuries and bruises on her head, neck and legs.

The case is investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.
