Man suspected of taking upskirt pictures dies after resisting arrest

KUALA LUMPUR: A 53-year-old man who allegedly took secret photos up the skirt of a woman at a restaurant in Jalan Telawi 4, Bangsar, with his mobile phone, died when police tried to confront him on Sunday night.

The 10.40pm incident unfolded when another patron of the restaurant, a 35-year-old woman, lodged a police report after she noticed him committing the act.

It is learnt that the suspect had used his camera phone to take upskirt pictures of a young woman seated across him at another table.

Brickfields acting police chief Superintendent Arifai Tarawe said the complainant went to the Bangsar police station across the restaurant to lodge the report and returned with police officers.

"When he was confronted, the man denied any wrongdoing. The police officers then asked him to hand over his mobile phone, but he refused. He then tried to escape and ran towards the alley at the back of the restaurant. They gave chase and tried to pin him down, but he became very aggresive," Arifai said.

"A scuffle ensued before the man suddenly passed out," Arifai said.

He added medical help arrived later and the man was given first aid treatment. Despite attempts to resuscitate him, he did not regained consciousness and was declared dead by the medical officer.

“The body was sent to University Malaya Medical Centre for a post-mortem. So far, the case has been classified as sudden death, pending an autopsy report," Arifai said.
