KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested a man, caught on video intimidating and verbally assaulting a nasi lemak customer who reprimanded him for not wearing a face mask at Jalan Desa Bakti, here on Sunday.
Brickfields deputy police chief Superintendent Basri Sagoni said the 33-year-old man was arrested last night at his house in Taman Desa, not far from where the 10.30am incident took place.
"The man was arrested last night and remanded this morning to facilitate investigations into the alleged threats he made against one of the stall customers", he said.
Basri said police obtained a one day remand on the suspect, until tomorrow.
"The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation and Regulation 17(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Disease (Measures Within Infected Local Areas (Movement Control) Regulations 2021 for violating the standard operating procedures (SOP) against Covid-19".
Yesterday, a 29-second video of the incident went viral on social media and a police report was also lodged by the nasi lemak stall owner's 21-year-old daughter.
The video was allegedly recorded by a bystander who provided a video copy to the stall owner after the man left.
"In the video, the suspect was seen scolding and cursing the stall owner and the customer after he was reprimanded for not complying with the SOPs," Basri said.
He said the suspect could face up to two years imprisonment or a fine or both for his offence plus a compound for SOP violation.
