Hospital staff arrested for allegedly installing mini-camera in ward bathroom

KULIM: Police detained an assistant at the Kulim Hospital here for allegedly installing a mini camera in the bathroom of a ward.

The presence of the mini camera came to light after it fell from the perch it was mounted on and spotted by a nurse on Thursday.

In the 6.20pm incident, the 30-year-old nurse found the device suspicious and immediately contacted the police.

A follow-up investigation led to the arrest of the assistant.

Kulim District Police Chief, Superintendent Sazalee Adam said investigation revealed that the electronic gadget was in a tissue box mounted on the wall. The nurse found the mini camera after hearing the sound of something falling on the floor.

"The nurse then contacted and handed over all the items to the police and as a result of further investigation, a man who is also a hospital staff was arrested.

"The 35-year-old suspect was arrested at 7.20pm the same night in front of a hospital ward," he said today.

According to him, apart from the mini camera, the police also confiscated a mobile charger, a mobile phone, two SIM cards, a memory card and cable from the suspect.

He said the suspect admitted he purchased the mini camera online a month ago.

"The suspect also claimed that he mounted the mini camera at 5pm the same day but we are still conducting further investigation into the incident," he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 509 of the Penal Code for insulting the modesty of a woman by word, through sound, gesture or exhibition of any object and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 for insulting behaviour.
