KUALA LUMPUR: Local singer Muhammad Radhi Razali of the alternative rock band OAG was today charged with assaulting his ex-wife at a parking lot near Kota Damansara on Tuesday.
The accused better known as Radhi OAG, however, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him at the Petaling Jaya Magistrate's Court.
The 44-year-old singer, clad in a blue shirt, arrived at the court complex at about 8.55am before he was escorted into the dock by several policemen.
Radhi was accused of having voluntarily caused hurt to his 27-year-old ex-wife at 2.29pm on April 19.
The offence falls under Section 323 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to a year or fine or both, upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamed Wafi Husain asked the court to impose RM7,000 bail against the accused.
However, counsel Haziq Aizuddin Subhi who represented the accused pleaded for minimum bail stating that his client did not have a fixed income.
"He also needs to support his children who are in his custody," he said.
Magistrate Muhammad Iskandar Zainol later set RM2,500 as bail in one surety and fixed July 13 for mention.
He also ordered the accused not to disturb any prosecution witnesses.
It was reported that Radhi was arrested at his home on Tuesday after police received a report made by the victim.
Petaling Jaya district police chief Mohamad Fakhrudin Abdul Hamid said the assault happened after the two got into an argument in the car park area of the singer's home.
This was apparently due to the woman refusing to take a picture with him which caused him to start scolding her and then beating her up, which resulted in various bruises on her body.
Radhi formed OAG with close friends in 1994. The band is best known for the hit songs Akustatik, Permaisuri, Generasiku and 60s TV.
