Two men shot dead after exchange of fire in Gurun

GURUN: Two men were killed in a shootout with police at Jalan Jeniang-Kalai, near here last night.

In the 11pm incident, police on patrol spotted the suspects, aged 61 and 48, acting suspiciously.

According to a source, the duo were in a car near a water treatment plant before being ordered to stop by police.

"But the driver kept accelerating, forcing the police to intercept the vehicle the two suspects were riding in.

"When the police wanted to carry out an inspection, the two suspects started to fire," he said.

A source said the police had to return fire in self-defence, and further checks that both were Malaysians.

"Further investigation found that one them had more than 60 records involving various offences.

"The suspect is also wanted by the police for being involved in more than 15 robbery cases," he said.

According to him, further inspection also found two pistols and various burglary tools in the suspect's vehicle.

"The two suspects involved may be planning to carry out robberies.

"The bodies of the two were sent to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital, Alor Star for an autopsy," he said.

It is understood that a press conference on the incident will be held by the Kedah Police Chief, Datuk Wan Hassan Wan Ahmad soon.
