Shots fired: Suspected cable thief nabbed after high-speed chase

GEORGE TOWN: A man's reckless driving, endangering other road users, led to his arrest here this evening.

Acting Northeast police chief Superintendent Lee Swee Sake said, in the 5.30pm incident, police were forced to fire two shots at the left front tyre of the suspect's Honda Civic.

He said a policeman noticed the suspect behaving suspiciously in a car near the Tenaga Nasional Bhd substation on Jalan Kelawei and pursued him.

"A policeman on patrol found a car being driven suspiciously and instructed the driver to stop for inspection. However, the driver accelerated and attempted to ram the policeman.

"He then drove dangerously, colliding with several nearby vehicles. As a result, the policeman was forced to fire two shots to stop the man. However, the man continued driving.

"He eventually had to stop about 200m from the scene because of a flat tyre. Nevertheless, he managed to flee towards the Midland area.

"The man tried to hide but was arrested at a nearby shopping complex about 500m from where he abandoned his car," he said.

Lee said initial investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to be involved in the theft of copper cables at the TNB substation.
