KUALA LUMPUR: Actress, Puteri Sarah Liyana has presented new evidence to the lower syariah court that her husband, Syamsul Yusof had hit her in 2020, that led to her leaving her home.
Puteri Sarah presented the evidence in front of Judge Syarie Akmaluddin Ilyas during her divorce proceedings here, today.
The new evidence came to light after Syamsul refused to pronounce the `talak' to divorce Puteri Sarah today.
"I prefer not to reveal the incident to the court but because Syamsul refuses to let me go (divorce) then I will share with the court.
"Previously, I decided to remain silent because of the love I feel for him.
"People also told me I will disgrace him if I lodge a report or do anything. No one knew about it," she said.
Puteri Sarah said it was her mother-in-law, Datin Patimah Ismail who "saved" her.
"She was the one who took me out of the house, two years ago. In fact, Syamsul knew the reason I left the house," she said.
According to Puteri Sarah's lawyer Datuk Akberdin Abdul Kader, the incident was among the facts that his client left the house after Syamsul accused her of nusyuz (disobedient).
"We have to present to the court what really happened. However, because of her good relationship with the parents-in-law, my client decided to return home.
"So the assumption of my client leaving the house without permission was incorrect because she had a solid reason," he said.
Earlier, Puteri Sarah and Syamsul were ordered by theJudge Syarie Akmaluddin Ilyaa to appoint a conciliatory committee (jawatankuasa pendamai – JKP) for their divorce case.
On Jan 16, Puteri Sarah as the plaintiff filed a divorce application at the registration counter of the Kuala Lumpur Syariah Court in accordance with Section 47 of the Islamic Family Law Act (Federal Territories) 1984.
Puteri Sarah was determined to file a divorce claim after Syamsul took on a second wife. She had previously stated that she refused to be in a polygamous marriage.
The two have been estranged in the last four years.
Puteri Sarah and Syamsul were married on March 8, 2014 and had two children, Syaikul Islam, 5, and Summayah, 3.
