KUALA LUMPUR: Police have opened an investigation paper (IP) into the "Jom Ziarah Gereja" programme by a non-governmental organisation under the Youth and Sports Ministry.
Despite the fact that the programme was cancelled yesterday, investigations have begun after a report on the matter was lodged at the Sentul police headquarters.
City police chief Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim said several statements have already been recorded in the course of the investigation.
The first statements were from the complainant and a witness, he said.
"We have also contacted a representative of the NGO who has agreed to go to the Sentul police headquarters tomorrow to have a statement recorded.
"Once the IP is completed, we will refer it to the deputy public prosecutor for further action," he said after the "High Profile Policing" programme at the Esplanade, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
The "Jom Ziarah Gereja" programme is an initiative under the Article 11 Project led by Impact Malaysia.
The programme, under the auspices of the Youth and Sports Ministry, is meant to introduce the different religions to people of other faiths in a bid to teach them about the similarities in each of them.
Last week, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh had told the Dewan Rakyat that the programme was not about evangelism and that no Muslims were involved.
On another matter, Azmi said police had recorded statements from seven people, including the organiser, in connection with the Women's March at Sogo and Dataran Merdeka.
"We expect to refer the IP to the DPP by Tuesday," he said.
