TEMERLOH: Posing as a customer, a 46-year-old man made off with gold necklaces worth RM91,000 from a jewellery shop in Mentakab near here on Monday.
However, his joy was short-lived when policemen tracked the suspect's whereabouts and nabbed him in his house along with the stolen items about 1.30pm the same day.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azhar Mohd Yusoff said the shop owner had lodged a report about the theft at noon on March 20.
"The suspect had entered the premises about 10.30am on the pretext of buying jewellery. When the owner was busy entertaining other customers, the suspect stole four gold necklaces and immediately walked out of the premises.
"The owner realised about the incident when he checked the closed-circuit television and a team of policemen managed to track down the suspect. The man was nabbed at a house in Mentakab and police also seized the stolen necklaces," he said, adding the case was being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft.
Azhar said the lone suspect, who has previous records for illegal gambling activities, had been remanded at the district police headquarters till March 24.
