SEGAMAT: A daredevil motorcyclist thought he had escaped a police dragnet by abandoning his bike by the roadside.
However, he left his bag containing his MyKad with the motorcycle, leaving the cops with the easy job of going to his house to track him down.
This was the outcome of Ops Samseng Jalanan, a special operation by the Segamat District Traffic Investigations and Enforcement Department's Intelligence Unit (Squad 42) to tackle illegal racing here at 3.30am today.
The policemen had spotted a group of bikers, including the suspect on his Honda EX5, performing illegal stunts on the road.
The suspect in his early 20s, was racing with the others and showing off his skills such as wheelies, the 'superman' (riding while lying flat on his belly), weaving in and out of traffic as well as riding into incoming traffic.
Squad 42 personnel trailed the suspects. However, upon seeing the police car, the riders escaped in different directions.
The EX5 rider decided to abandon his motorcycle by the roadside near Bukit Siput here to escape on foot.
However, he left a bag containing wallet with his MyKad in the motorcycle carrier.
Police made their way to his house, which was located some 10 minutes away from where the bike was abandoned.
The suspect was not at home, but the policemen persuaded his parents to convince him to turn himself in.
The suspect, accompanied by his parents, eventually showed up at the district traffic police headquarters at 4.20am.
In the operation, Squad 42 issued 44 summonses for various traffic offences and confiscated 10 motorcycles as well as three cars to facilitate investigations under Section 64(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Squad 42 was established to combat illegal racing.
The officers can issue summonses and arrest motorcyclists anywhere, with their scope not just limited to operations.
Members and officers of the squad have the power to issue summons and make arrests after carrying out intelligence-gathering and observation.
