SHAH ALAM: The owner of a Sports Utility Vehicle, in a frantic rush to catch an overseas flight, allegedly obstructed an ambulance driver ferrying a patient to the Banting Hospital on Dec 18.
A 58-second video of the incident, recorded by the ambulance's dashboard camera, has been shared on the Facebook account of the ambulance driver.
The footage shows the ambulance being blocked by a Toyota Corolla Cross on the Klang-Banting road. The SUV driver was travelling from Jenjarom towards Banting.
Despite the ambulance driver sounding the horn and using a loudspeaker to request passage, the driver of the SUV adamantly remained in the right lane.
Kuala Langat police chief Supt Mohd Akmalrizal Radzi said today police had summoned the Facebook account owner, who is also the ambulance driver, for questioning.
"An initial investigation revealed that the incident occurred at 9.45pm on Dec 18, when the ambulance was proceeding from the Jenjarom Health Clinic towards Banting Hospital.
"According to the driver's report, the ambulance had activated its beacon lights and sirens for an emergency assignment to transport a patient to the Banting Hospital.
"However, the driver of the Toyota Corolla Cross who was in front of the ambulance did not give way," he said in a statement.
Akmalrizal added that the driver and owner of the Toyota Corolla Cross were taken to the Kuala Langat district police headquarters for questioning.
"The owner of the SUV is the father of the driver, who is in his 20s. He was detained at 11.30pm last night.
"It was revealed that the SUV driver was rushing to Kuala Lumpur International Airport out of concern of missing a flight to China. The driver of the Toyota Corolla Cross is currently abroad," he said.
"The case is being investigated under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987," he added.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the local police station or contact Inspector S. Taneswaran (Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Kuala Langat district police headquarters) at 012-6708561 or 03-31872222.
