Two men fined RM4,000 each for beating a man with aluminium rod

IPOH: Two men were fined RM4,000 each by the magistrate's court here today after pleading guilty to beating a man with an aluminium rod, last week.

Magistrate Jesseca Daimis meted the sentences to Helmi Zaharuddin, 43, and Aslam Suliman, 28, today.

She also ordered them to serve nine months in prison if they failed to pay the fine.

According to the charge sheet, the duo, together with another individual who is still at large were accused of intentionally causing injury to K. Gopal, 34, in the head using an aluminium rod.

The offence was allegedly committed by the roadside near Batu 8, Jalan Tanjung Rambutan-Tambun here at 5.30pm on July 27.

The offence under Section 324 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 10 years or with fine or with whipping or any two of such punishments, upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nabilah Norzam prosecuted while Helmi and Aslam who work as a motorcycle painter and a mechanic, respectively, were represented by a lawyer from National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK), G. Harbhajan Singh.

Earlier, Nabilah asked the court to impose an appropriate sentence to teach them a lesson, but Harbhajan requested the court to impose a minimum fine since the case was their first offence and the accused had repented.

Meanwhile, in the same proceeding at the same courtroom, Aslam was fined RM1,800, in default of three months' jail for consuming amphetamine and methamphetamine, last year.

Jesseca also ordered Aslam to undergo surveillance under the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) for two years.

He was accused of committing the offence at the Ipoh district police headquarters's Narcotic Criminal Investigation Division Office at 8.40pm on Oct 24.

The offence falls under Section 15 (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug abuse, which carries a maximum of two years jail and a fine of not more than RM5,000, or both and supervision of not more than three years.

On Saturday, a 16-second viral video showed a group of men involved in a fight along a road in Tanjung Rambutan here.

In the viral footage, three men wearing helmets were seen beating a man using the aluminium rod.
