KUALA LUMPUR: A 2-year-old girl has died of suspected food poisoning today, following the death of a 17-year-old boy yesterday after eating food prepared at a school canteen here.
Gombak police chief Assistant Commissioner Noor Ariffin Mohamad Nasir said his department received a report of the food poisoning from the families of both victims yesterday.
"The first victim, a 17-year-old boy, ate the food that his mother brought home from a programme at a school here.
"The victim, along with his mother and father, experienced diarrhoea after consuming the food the day before yesterday," he said.
Ariffin said the victim was pronounced dead by the assistant medical officer of Kuala Lumpur Hospital after losing consciousness yesterday.
"The second victim, a 2-year old female toddler, also ate the food brought back by her father, who works as a security guard at the school.
"He fed the victim with the same food that was provided at the school after the programme," he said.
Ariffin said the victim's mother later noticed that she had fever, vomiting and diarrhoea, and took her to Selayang Hospital.
"The victim was pronounced dead while receiving treatment at the hospital yesterday," said Ariffin.
"The bodies of both victims were sent to the Selayang Hospital Forensic Unit for further action," he added.
The cases were classified as sudden death by police.
Ariffin said, members of the public who witnessed or had information regarding these incidents were asked to come forward to assist in investigations.
"The public can contact the Gombak district police chief, Inspector Heirme Che Mad at 014-238 9151 and criminal investigation officer Inspector Khalpna Rajandhiran at 012-501 8901.
"They can also call the Gombak district police headquarters operations room at 03-61262222," he said.
Earlier it was reported, the 17-year-old boy's mother had brought back fried bihun and fried eggs after attending a programme at a religious school in Sungai Cincin.
The first victim's father, who was only known as Kamal, said he, his wife and their son had eaten the fried eggs, while their two daughters ate the fried bihun only.
He said his son ate three eggs and shortly after that, the three of them began experiencing stomach pain.
"Today (yesterday), I went to the clinic and thought my son was doing fine," he said.
When he returned home at noon, he was shocked to learn that his son had died.
