KOTA MARUDU: Police are tracking down a female suspect believed to have stolen a wallet from a woman at a restaurant here.
Kota Marudu police chief Superintendent Zairolnizal Ishak said the incident occurred at 12.30pm on July 20, when the 59-year-old victim was about to make a payment at the restaurant counter and realised her wallet was missing from her backpack.
Suspecting it had been stolen, she filed a police report, said Zairolnizal.
"Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage shows an unidentified woman pretending to look at a menu near the victim at the counter. The suspect then reached into the woman's backpack, took the wallet and left the restaurant," he said today.
Zairolnizal said the CCTV footage showed the suspect walking across the street towards a white Proton Iswara.
"The victim could not identify the suspect as there were many customers at the time. The theft resulted in a loss of RM2,500, including RM1,800 in cash," he said, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft.
Yesterday, a 52-second video showing two women looking at the menu in a restaurant went viral.
The video footage shows one woman reaching into the bag of another woman next to her and taking the wallet before leaving the restaurant.
