Drug suspect crashes after 100km chase, police find compressed ganja in boot

KUANTAN: A dramatic 100km high-speed chase involving a police Expressway Mobile Patrol Vehicle (EMPV) and a man driving a Honda along the East Coast Expressway Phase 2 (LPT2) concluded when the suspect crashed his vehicle near Sungai Ular yesterday.

The Federal Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department in a Facebook post wrote that the pursuit began when the EMPV flagged down the suspect's vehicle for inspection at KM267 of the expressway near the Kampung Gemuroh toll plaza in Kuala Terengganu.

"The Honda driver was stopped and instructed to step out of the vehicle to allow policemen to inspect the car boot. However, the driver sped off before he exited the Jabor toll plaza and crashed into the boom gate.

"The EMPV requested for back up from other teams as they trailed the suspect who drove towards Jalan Sungai Ular. Despite being warned to stop, the suspect continued driving before he crashed near a food court at Sungai Ular after the car front tyre burst.

"The suspect tried to flee the scene on foot but policemen managed to nab him and upon inspecting the car boot, they found four boxes containing compressed ganja," read the post.

Kuantan police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu confirmed the arrest.

The suspect, a 49-year-old male, has been remanded until Aug 8 for investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, related to drug trafficking.
