KUANTAN: The lone suspect who was caught transporting a consignment of compressed ganja worth RM360,000 in his car at Sungai Ular near here on June 1 operated independently.
Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the 48-year-old suspect had just obtained the drugs weighing 111kg from the border of a neighbouring state and was driving along the East Coast Expressway Phase 2 (LPT2) to distribute them when he was flagged down by a police Expressway Mobile Patrol Vehicle (EMPV).
"The suspect had just been involved in drug distribution activities since early this year and acted alone. We are investigating where he was supposed to deliver the supplies or if someone was waiting to receive the drugs as he was travelling along the LPT2.
"We are investigating if he had been hired as a transporter and regularly used the LPT2 to deliver drugs either in Pahang or the Klang Valley. The suspect who was tested positive for methamphetamine has three previous records for possessing drugs," he said, adding the seizure represents the state's largest drug haul this year.
Yahaya was speaking to reporters during a press conference held at the state police contingent headquarters here today.
It was reported on July 1, a police EMPV was involved in a 100km high-speed chase before they arrested the suspect.
The EMPV had flagged down the suspect's vehicle for inspection at KM267 of the expressway near the Kampung Gemuroh toll plaza in Kuala Terengganu but the man sped-off.
He later crashed his car before policemen found boxes containing compressed ganja in his car boot.
Meanwhile, Yahaya said investigations revealed the vehicle did not belong to the suspect and police were tracking down the owner.
He said the suspect, who is unemployed, has been remanded until Aug 8 for further investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
