KUALA LUMPUR: Cheras police have crippled a drug syndicate following the arrest of a local man and the seizure of over 65kg of ganja.
The suspect, an unemployed man in his 30s, was believed to be supplying the drugs to regular customers within the Klang Valley since early this year.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Ravindar Singh said they conducted surveillance and intelligence gathering following a tip-off, before arresting the suspect on Sept 5.
"We raided a condominium at Cheras at around 9pm and arrested the suspect and seized 62.56kg of ganja which had been compressed into bricks.
"Our checks revealed the suspect is unemployed and does not have a prior record," he told a press conference at the Cheras police headquarters on Wednesday.
He said a few hours later, police conducted another raid at a house in Segambut and seized another 3.12kg of ganja there.
"We also found weighing scales and a vacuum sealer device at the house.
"We seized all the items, including the drugs, as well as a Perodua Axia car," he said, adding that the entire seizure was RM203,723.
He said further investigations revealed that the suspect received his supply in Kuala Lumpur from another man.
"We are now conducting investigations to identify this individual.
"Based on our investigations, the suspect we arrested was selling the drugs to regular customers," he said, adding that the suspect was believed to have received orders via phone call.
He said the seized drugs could have supplied 131,370 users if they had hit the streets.
