Motorcyclists rode against traffic to avoid police operation

BUTTERWORTH: An operation conducted along the Butterworth Outer Ring Road (BORR) on Sunday to weed out the 'mat rempit' menace saw a large group of motorcyclists riding dangerously against the flow of traffic to avoid checks.

Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Abdul Rahman said investigations showed the incident happened at about 7pm on Sunday.

He said the incident stemmed from the Op Samseng Jalanan conducted by a team of police from the district.

"The group of motorcyclists resorted to fleeing checks by riding against traffic.

"In the operation, the police nabbed a motorcyclist under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for riding recklessly and dangerously.

"Police also seized 25 motorcycles for various offences," he said today.

The police reminded all road users to adhere to traffic rules at all times so as not to endanger their own lives as well as those of other road users.

A video footage of the incident went viral on social media yesterday.

The Penang Press Facebook page uploaded the 38-second footage which showed the motorcyclists riding against traffic near Bagan Ajam here.

Meanwhile, netizen Samsudin Ali said the authorities should come out with an amicable solution to address the issue.

"Parents should also play their role to monitor their children," he added.

Noor Jarina said the motorcyclists were doing "crazy work" by riding against traffic.

"If they are unlucky, there will be a crash among themselves and it may end up fatal. Appreciate your lives," she added.
