Man falls to death after jumping from bridge to evade police

KUALA TERENGGANU: A man, suspected of selling drugs, died after jumping off a bridge in Kampung Bujal Payoh, Kemaman, while attempting to evade police, last night.

Kemaman district police chief Supt Hanyan Ramlan said police saw the man behaving suspiciously on the bridge, around 9.30pm.

"Based on intelligence on drug activities in the area, police then approached the 23-year-old, who then leapt off the bridge, which is over 12 metres high," he said when contacted today.

The area underneath the bridge is strewn with rocks and is a section of the incomplete East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project.

Police rushed to render aid to the man but the victim was already dead.

A post-mortem conducted by the Kemaman Hospital's Forensic Unit confirmed the man's death as a result of head injuries, consistent with a fall from a high place.

"The case is classified as sudden death," he added.
