KUALA LUMPUR: Federal Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department Director Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri has warned his personnel against abusing their authority or violating the law.
He said stern consequences await those who refused to take heed.
"Let this serve as a reminder to all personnel that abuse of power or misconduct will not be tolerated.
"We take this stand to ensure that all our personnel conduct themselves properly and maintain the image of the police force at all times," he told the New Straits Times.
His comments follow the arrest of three highway patrol policemen for allegedly extorting a foreigner along the North-South Expressway.
In the incident on Sunday evening, the 50-year-old Arabian man claimed he was driving on the Expressway when policemen flagged him down near KM227 of the Expressway at Negri Sembilan.
It was learnt that they approached him and asked for his driver's licence and passport.
The trio then demanded RM1,000 from the man but he told them that he did not have that much money on him.
The man claimed that the suspects instructed him to transfer the money to a bank account.
It was believed that they only let the man leave once he transferred RM250 to a bank account.
The man then lodged a police report.
Mohd Yusri said the three suspects have been arrested and are currently under remand to facilitate further investigations.
They have also been transferred out of the unit, he said.
