Mentally disabled man feared drowned at Sungai Pahang in Pekan

PEKAN: A 49-year-old mentally disabled man is feared to have drowned after his slippers were found next to Sungai Pahang at Kampung Kiambang near Ganchong here, yesterday.

Mahadir Abd Hamid was reported missing since 9am yesterday before family members and villagers searched the area. They lodged a police report after failing to locate him.

State Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Zulfadli Zakaria said the department was alerted about 11pm yesterday.

"Police informed us that the missing villager might have drowned after recovering his slippers along the riverbank.

"Five firemen from the Peramu station were deployed to search the area but the victim could not be located.

"Search and rescue operation was suspended about 12.14am and resumed at 8am today," he said in a statement.

He added that villagers from the nearby settlements were searching along the river to track down the missing man.
