Pekan man missing since Aug 25 found drowned in Sungai Pahang

PEKAN: A 39-year-old man who went missing after failing to return from the Sultan Ahmad Shah Al-Haj mosque on Aug 25 was found dead today.

The body of Mohd Suffian Abu Bakar was discovered floating in Sungai Pahang at Kampung Pasir Panjang at 9.35am.

A post-mortem examination revealed that the cause of death was drowning.

Pekan police chief Superintendent Mohd Zaidi Mat Zin stated that the victim's 32-year-old wife had lodged a missing person report at 8pm on Aug 25 after her husband failed to return home.

"The victim had informed his wife that he was going to the Sultan Ahmad Shah Al-Haj mosque to perform Maghrib prayers. He did not bring his phone, wallet, or MyKad with him.

"When he did not return, his wife and several family members went to the mosque to search for him. Concerned for his safety, his wife filed a police report the same day," he said in a statement.

Mohd Zaidi said villagers at Kampung Pasir Panjang alerted the police after spotting the body in the river.

With the assistance of firefighters, the police retrieved the body, which was later identified by the victim's sister at Pekan hospital based on his clothing, he said.

The post-mortem examination found no evidence of foul play, and the case has been classified as an accidental drowning.

The remains have been handed over to the family for burial.
