Cops nab suspect in viral ice cream shop stabbing case

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested a man suspected of robbing an ice cream shop employee at knife-point, in an incident which went viral recently.

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage of the incident - which showed a masked man entering the Taman Sri Muda shop in Shah Alam and attacking the 21-year-old woman - was widely shared on social media.

Shah Alam police chief, Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim, said based on information gathered, police had arrested a 39-year-old Pakistani man at a flat in Puncak Alam, Selangor.

"Police also recovered a knife used as well as the clothes worn by the suspect in the robbery," he said in a statement.

He said the suspect will be remanded at the Shah Alam courts on Aug 17. The case, he said, is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt in a robbery.

If convicted, the suspect could face a maximum of 20 years in jail, as well as fine or whipping.

"We believe that the case is solved following the arrest. We advise the people to cooperate with the police in tackling criminal cases.
