Ambulance carrying woman in labour collides with police car

TENOM: A woman in labour faced a harrowing moment when the ambulance transporting her to the hospital collided with a police patrol car at Km13 of the Tenom-Keningau Road here, yesterday.

District police chief Deputy Superintendent Ediansha Endal said the ambulance driver was en route from Tenom Hospital, transporting the patient to Keningau Hospital.

"Upon reaching the scene, the police car made a right turn, and at the same time, the ambulance driver couldn't stop in time.

"Due to the close distance, the ambulance attempted to avoid the collision by swerving to the right but ended up hitting the side of the police car," he said when contacted today.

The 37-year-old police patrol car driver and the 41-year-old ambulance driver were unharmed.

However, the other policeman in the patrol car, 21, sustained minor injuries.

"The patient in labour was safely transferred to another ambulance and taken to Keningau Hospital," said Ediansha.

It was understood that the 28-year-old woman successfully gave birth to a baby girl at the hospital.

"At the time of the incident, the weather was foggy. The case has been classified under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," said Ediansha.
