ARAU: Police have obtained a four-day remand order against a retired soldier and one other to assist investigations into a telecommunication cable theft case near Taman Jejawai Permai here last Friday.
Arau police chief Superintendent Ahmad Mohsin Md Rodi said the suspects were arrested in Sungai Petani, Kedah at 6.10pm yesterday. The remand order started today.
"The retired soldier, aged 34, was arrested at his home in Taman Ria Jaya while the second suspect, aed 35, who works as a mechanic was arrested at a separate house in the same area," he said in a statement.
Mohsin said based on interrogation, the retired soldier admitted renting a Proton X70 SUV that was used in the cable theft case.
"The vehicle was rented in Ayer Itam, Penang and was handed over to another suspect who is still at large.
"The second suspect had confessed to driving a Perodua Myvi during the incident and fleeing from the scene.
"Checks showed that the second suspect has 20 criminal and drug abuse records," said Mohsin.
In another incident which occurred last Friday at 4.20am near Taman Jejawi Permai, a man driving an SUV rammed into a police car before trying to knock down two policemen who alighted from the vehicle.
Mohsin said the two policemen fired five shots at the SUV as the driver sped off but the car came to a stop at the entrance of Taman Jejawi Permai after a short chase.
The police team managed to apprehend four men in the SUV after a brief scuffle.
All the men, aged between 20 and 34, also hailed from Sungai Petani, Kedah.
They are allegedly behind to telco cable theft cases reported in Perlis, following the seizure of an assortment of equipment to steal telco cables and a 150-metre cable belonging to Telekom Malaysia Bhd.
