Police forced to fire shots at car driven at high speed against traffic [WATCH]

TUARAN: Police were forced to fire several shots at a car after it was driven at high speed against traffic on Jalan Tuaran near a petrol station in Pekan Telipok last night.

In the incident, which occurred around 9.30pm, the Proton Wira, carrying two men, was driven dangerously, even attempting to ram into a police patrol vehicle (MPV).

District police chief Superintendent Noraidin Ag Maidin said the incident was initially noticed by a police patrol car from the Kota Kinabalu police headquarters (IPD).

He added that upon receiving the information, the Tuaran IPD MPV team immediately headed to the scene to assist.

"The police MPV tried to stop the car, but the suspects sped off and attempted to ram the police vehicle.

"In response to the situation, police fired several shots at the suspects' vehicle," he said in a statement today.

Noraidin said the shots were fired to stop the vehicle and to protect themselves, as well as the safety of other road users.

The speeding vehicle, which was heading towards Taman Sri Rugading, was eventually stopped.

"Upon stopping, the two suspects tried to flee, but were apprehended.

"The suspects, in their 30s, were found in possession of drug paraphernalia used to consume syabu," he said.

Noraidin also revealed that checks showed both suspects had prior criminal records.

"The investigation will be carried out under Section 307 of the Penal Code," he added.
