BH assistant news editor's son among three UiTM students killed in crash

DUNGUN: Three Dungun Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) students were killed and another was severely injured after their motorcycles were rammed into by a sports utility vehicle in front of their campus in Kampung Sura Hujung here last night.

In the 7.20pm incident, the four students on two motorcycles were rammed into by a Honda CRV SUV driven by a woman.

The victims were riding a Yamaha LC 135 and Y15.

The victims were identified as Ku Adib Aizad Ku Azmi, 20, and Khairil Anuar Jamaluddin, 20, who are bachelor of accounts students and Mohd Akhmal Tukirin, 20, who is a hospitality major.

Their friend Mohd Ammar Danish Mohd Rodhuan, 20, who sustained severe injuries is being treated at the Dungun Hospital and will be transfered to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital, Kuala Terengganu for further treatment.

Ku Adib Aizad is the son of Berita Harian assistant news editor, Hafizah Iszahanid and his father, Ku Azmi Saad is a staff at Print Tower Sdn Bhd (PTSB), a company under the New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd.

The crash happened when the couple were travelling to Makkah to perform their umrah through Media Prima Bhd's 'Program Umrah dan Ziarah 2024'. They were among 127 participants of the programme comprising staff and their family members.

Their flight departed Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 5.35pm yesterday and arrived in Jeddah at 9.15pm (local time).

Hafizah and Ku Azmi later returned to Kuala Lumpur on a 1.55am flight.

When contacted, Dungun district police chief Superintendent Maizura Abdul Kadir confirmed receiving a report of the incident.

The case is investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

During the incident, all the victims were returning from dinner near the university campus.

It is believed that the driver of the Honda CRV crashed into the rear of the two motorcycles. The impact caused one of the motorcyclists to be thrown into the nearby drain. The CRV also crashed into the drain.

Dungun Fire and Rescue station chief Shahrizal Shamsudin said it received a call at 7.26pm and 10-member team on two vehicles including a Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle were dispatched to the location.

He said firefighters brought up a body of a victim who fell in the drain.

"Three victims were pronounced dead by medical officers at the scene. The bodies were handed over to police for further action," he said.

The Dungun UiTM rector, via Instagram said the 'mandi jenazah' and other rites would be performed on the three students in the Dungun Hospital at 10am today before prayers at Masjid UiTM Dungun. Their remains would later be transported to Ampang, Sungai Buloh and Muar for burial.

The management the Terengganu UiTM branch have also confirmed the death of three of its students, and the other student who was severely injured in the incident.

"The university expresses its sadness on the incident and we convery our condolences to the families of the students.

"May Allah SWT bless the souls of the students and may Allah ease their families' affairs.

"The university will provide assistance and support needed by the families," it said in a statement last night.
