RANTAU PANJANG: A suspected drug addict has been caught with a protected species animal part and drugs after crossing the border illegally at the Jambu jetty here last night.

The man, in his 20s, had just crossed Sungai Golok from Thailand when he was arrested by General Operations Force personnel about 7pm.

A sun bear's nail and 148 pills believed to be drugs were seized from him.

GOF Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said a team from the 7th Battalion was conducting Op Taring Wawasan when security personnel spotted the man behaving suspiciously.

"After checking the suspect, the officers found the bear nail, 115 methamphetamine and 33 Epam pills on the man.

"The nail was worth RM500 and the pills were valued about RM2,240," he said in a statement today.

He said the man had been taken to the Pasir Mas police station for further action.

On another note, Nik Ros Azahan said seven foreigners were arrested for entering the country illegally in Pasir Mas on Thursday and last night. The seven suspects comprised five Indian nationals and two from Thailand, aged between 20 to 50.

He said the Indian nationals were detained at a bus station in Pasir Mas about 10.30pm.
