ALOR STAR: A 44-year-old contractor was fined RM5,000 by the Sessions Court here today for cheating a senior police officer over maintenance work on police quarters in Langkawi four years ago.
Judge N. Priscilla Hemamalini imposed the sentence on Mohd Farid Wajdi Harun, a sub-contractor of Lembah Dimensi Enterprise, after he pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 417 of the Penal Code.
According to the charge, Farid allegedly deceived the then Kedah Deputy Criminal Investigation Department chief Superintendent Zailani Mohd Yusoff. Farid had allegedly led him to believe that civil repair and maintenance work on the old marine police quarters in Langkawi — intended to be converted as a K9 Unit base—was complete.
However, two metal dog restraints and 19 water pipes and hoses, valued at RM2,260 were not installed. Farid had allegedly misled Zailani into signing an invoice from Lembah Dimensi Enterprise, dated Oct 13, 2020, confirming the work as completed for payment purposes.
The offence allegedly took place at the Kedah contingent police headquarters on Oct 13, 2020. It carries a jail term of up to five years, a fine, or both.
The prosecution was led by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission prosecuting officer Mohd Zulfadli Azharudin, while Farid was unrepresented.
In mitigation, Farid requested a minimum sentence as he was supporting his four children and elderly parents.
The court fined Farid RM5,000, in default five months' jail.
