Cops searching for motorcyclist following viral pursuit

PETALING JAYA: Police are actively searching for a motorcyclist who fled from officers after running a red light in Dataran Bandar Utama early on Oct 27.

This was after a video showing the motorcyclist speeding past a restaurant, with police in hot pursuit, went viral.

According to police chief ACP Shahrulnizam Ja'afar, a patrol unit spotted "a man on a motorcycle running a red light" at around 1.30am.

Officers attempted to stop the motorcyclist, but he "refused to cooperate and sped off," leading police on a chase through Jalan Masjid towards Pekan Kayu Ara.

The pursuit ended when the suspect escaped near the Kayu Ara Flats, suspected to have crossed a shallow river to evade capture.

"The motorcycle was abandoned near the riverbank, along with a red helmet," Shahrulnizam said, adding that the vehicle has been impounded for further investigation.

The motorcycle was registered to a Malay woman with no prior theft report filed.

A police report has been lodged, and the case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code.

"Efforts to track down the suspect are actively ongoing," he stated, urging anyone with information to contact the Petaling Jaya District Police Operations Room at 03-79662222 or Investigating Officer SM Muhammad Syafiq Razali at 017-5707270.
