TELUK INTAN: An unemployed man was arrested last night for vandalising the Kampung Bahagia Railway Bridge in the area.
Hilir Perak district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Adnan Basri, said that the 44-year-old suspect was detained after police received a complaint at 10pm.
During initial questioning, the suspect confessed to the vandalism, and four cans of paint in various colours were confiscated.
"Urine tests conducted on him returned positive for cannabis, and he has a criminal record spanning from 2012 to 2022," he said in a statement today.
The man has been remanded for three days until Nov 6 for further investigation.
The case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief and causing damage, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, a fine, or both upon conviction.
Ahmad Adnan said that the investigation papers would be referred to the deputy public prosecutor for potential charges and reminded the public of the importance of respecting public property.
The Kampung Bahagia Railway Bridge, constructed in May 1891 and completed in November 1892, served as a vital part of the Teluk Anson-Tapah Road railway route during the colonial era.
Today, it stands as a notable tourist attraction in Teluk Intan, with significant potential to draw visitors.
