Paid RM5,000 to smuggle drugs on Sarawak-bound flight

KUCHING: Two men were detained when they smuggled various types of drugs weighing almost 22kg into Sarawak via the Miri Airport on Wednesday.

State Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said during questioning, the men aged 36 and 42, admitted to being paid RM5,000 to smuggle the drugs from Peninsular Malaysia.

Checks revealed that one of them had four criminal records under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Sections 379, 448 and 457 of the Penal Code.

"Further checks led to the discovery of 22kg of drugs in the two men's luggage comprising 10.83kg or Eramin 5; 4.1kg of ecstasy pills and 7kg of syabu.

"Initial screenings found that both suspects were positive for Methamphetamine, Amphetamine, and Benzo," he told Berita Harian.

Mancha said the drugs were smuggled into Sarawak for distribution locally and it could be consumed by 102,817 addicts.

"Both suspects have been remanded for six days from yesterday until Nov 13 to facilitate investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952.

"The section carries a death sentence or life sentence, if the person is not given a death sentence, upon conviction," he said.
