KUCHING: A sombre atmosphere enveloped the Samariang Muslim cemetery in Petra Jaya today as murder victim Nurul Asikin Lan was laid to rest.
The remains of the 26-year-old woman were laid to rest at 1.10pm, with approximately 500 family members and friends present to pay their last respects.
Earlier, prayers were recited when her body arrived at the Raudhatul Sakinah Complex at the cemetery at 12.30pm.
Yesterday, Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata confirmed Nurul Asikin's identity after her decomposed remains were kept at the forensics unit of the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) since last Sunday.
Mancha had said the confirmation was made following DNA tests.
Meanwhile, the remand period for the main suspect, a man in his 20s, in the case, will expire on Dec 22.
Mancha said the suspect confessed to killing the victim and pawning her jewellery to fund his trip to Cambodia to watch the Malaysia vs Cambodia football match at the 2024 Mitsubishi Electric Asean Cup in Phnom Penh on Dec 8.
The suspect was arrested on Dec 14 and subsequently led police to the location where he had disposed of the victim's body near a rubbish disposal area in Jalan Setia Raja, Tabuan Jaya.
