Cold justice: 5 years jail for ice cream shop robber

KLANG: One of the three people involved in an ice cream store robbery that went viral in Pandamaran on Oct 23 has been arrested and charged.

Klang Selatan police chief Assistant Commissioner Cha Hoong Fong said police arrested a 46-year-old man a day after the armed robbery that was captured on CCTV.

He said in the 9pm incident, two armed men wielding machetes entered the ice cream store and pushed a customer down before taking two mobile phones.

"A third person armed with a parang entered the premises and removed money from the cash register. They then fled in a car," he said.

Cha said a police report was lodged by a 16-year-old storekeeper who witnessed the robbery.

"Acting swiftly on the information, a team from the Klang Selatan Criminal Investigation Department conducted an operation the following day and arrested the main suspect at a residence in Pandamaran.

"The man, who has a history of criminal offences, was found with the machete and clothing worn during the crime," he said in a statement today.

"The man was charged under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code with armed gang robbery and sentenced to five years in prison, and ordered to get one stroke of the rotan for each of the three charges," Cha said.

He added that police were looking for the other robbers.
