PUTRAJAYA: The Immigration Department has denied a recent news report about its officer being involved in an altercation at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 (KLIA) that went viral recently.
Its director-general, Datuk Zakaria Shaaban, in a statement today, said a foreign traveller allegedly mistreated and punched by an officer after being issued a Not to Land (NTL) notice at the airport was not from the department.
He said the incident did not involve any of its officers.
"All foreign travellers seeking entry into Malaysia must fulfil the entry requirements before being granted Immigration clearance."
He said travellers failing to meet these requirements would be issued an NTL notice and surrendered to the airlines to be deported to the last point of embarkation.
"This is the requirement stated under Section 24 of the Immigration Act 1959/63."
While waiting for their departure, he said, the travellers issued with an NTL notice were accommodated in a holding lounge at KLIA.
"This area is air-conditioned, equipped with seating, and situated close to basic facilities such as restrooms.
"Travellers are also provided with meals three times a day by the airline."
He said the department was committed to providing excellent service to Malaysian citizens, as well as foreign travellers entering the country.
"The department is steadfast in ensuring its procedures align with the highest standards of professionalism and fairness."
Earlier, it was reported that the incident that occurred on Nov 10 involved an airline staff member and a passenger.
