KUALA LUMPUR: The senior student who allegedly stomped on a first-year Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) student, causing fractured ribs and spinal injuries, will be charged in court tomorrow.
City police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa confirmed that the investigation paper had been referred to the Attorney General's Chambers, which had instructed that the suspect be charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.
"The suspect will be charged at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex at 9am tomorrow," he said when contacted today.
Rusdi also said that police had recorded statements from 16 individuals during the investigation.
Section 323 of the Penal Code carries a penalty of up to one year in prison, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.
It was reported that police were about to refer the investigation paper to the deputy public prosecutors office after they recorded statements from 13 individuals.
The third-year UPNM student accused of stomping on the victim provided his statement at the Cheras police headquarters following a report lodged by the victim's father.
The 19-year-old first-year student suffered fractured ribs and a spinal injury, which are believed to have been caused by the senior's actions during an alleged incident on Oct 21.
This case follows another incident at UPNM, where a trainee sustained burn injuries after being pressed with an iron by a senior, marking the third case of abuse at the university in seven years.
In 2017, UPNM was shaken by the tragic death of cadet officer Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain, who was tortured and burned with a heated iron. Six former UPNM students were sentenced to death by hanging for his murder.
