BATU PAHAT: A lecturer at a public university lost RM115,600 to a non-existent part-time job scam after promises of high returns enticed him.
Batu Pahat district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani said the incident began on May 7, when the 44-year-old male victim was drawn to a part-time job offer.
He explained that the suspect promised a 15 per cent profit from the venture but set conditions requiring the victim to register and purchase goods through a website provided by the suspect.
"After purchasing the goods, the victim was told he would receive the promised profit," he said in a statement.
Shahrulanuar added that between May 7 and Sept 30, the victim transferred money into six different accounts in stages.
However, after making the payments, the victim discovered that the website provided by the suspect was no longer accessible.
"At the same time, the victim did not receive the promised returns, and only then did he realise he had been scammed."
The victim filed a report at the Sri Gading police station last Thursday for further action.
Investigations are ongoing, and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
