KUALA LUMPUR: Authorities arrested 17 parking touts during a crackdown in Bukit Bintang yesterday afternoon.
All 17 individuals detained in the operation are undocumented migrants in their 20s and 30s.
The foreigners, all men, comprise 15 Myanmar nationals and two Bangladeshis.
KL Immigration Department director Wan Mohammed Saupee Wan Yusoff said the KL Strike Force carried out the crackdown with officers from the department and the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
"The operation was conducted at two locations in Bukit Bintang, where 11 touts were arrested at the first location, while the remaining six were nabbed at the second."
Earlier, a 98-second video showing a local resident complaining about the parking touts went viral.
Wan Mohammed Saupee said the authorities took note of the complaint and acted swiftly, arresting the touts in under 24 hours.
"Preliminary investigations indicate the touts had no employers and are believed to have asked motorists to pay what they could for parking."
He added that further investigations are being conducted to determine if the touts were part of a syndicate.
The case is being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act for failing to produce valid travel documents and Rule 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations for breaching the conditions of their visit passes.
