Construction, maintenance works on highways, roads suspended for Hari Raya

SEREMBAN: All construction and maintenance works on highways, federal and state roads have been temporarily suspended from June 18 until July 2.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the move is to ensure smoother flow of traffic as many are expected to return to their hometowns for Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

"However, emergency and critical works are excluded from the temporary cessation. The Public Works Department and the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) have also set up patrol teams to monitor accidents and road damage," he said after the launch of 'Coffee Break' in conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri here today.

Meanwhile Fadillah said road safety campaigns will be amplified this year to reduce the number of accidents and deaths on the road.

"The number of fatal cases recorded during Hari Raya last year had decreased to 273 cases compared to 302 cases in 2015. This illustrates the need for us to improve road safety campaign thoroughly this year to reduce accidents and deaths on the road," he said.

Apart from that, Fadillah said, speed limit will be reduced by 10kph for all federal roads from June 18 to July 2.

"The speed limits will be lowered to 80kph for federal roads and we will request cooperation from the state government to lower the speed limit to 70kph for state roads during the period," he said.
