Muar floods recede, situation back to normal

MUAR: A two-hour downpour, coupled with rising waters from Sungai Muar, led to flash floods in several areas in Muar town, including the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital.

However, the flood did not affect the hospital's operation as it only hit the parking area, the emergency unit and the front entrance corridors.

State Environment, Health, Education and Information Executive Committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat said the situation at the hospital is now back to normal.

"There is no truth to rumours saying that hospital patients had to be moved and that the hospital's operation was affected. The conditions have gone back to normal," said Ayub.

Other affected areas included the Jalan Sulaiman roundabout, Jalan Timbalan, Jalan Arab, Jalan Bakri, Jalan Abdul Rahman and the Sungai Abong and Tanjung Emas areas, following the rain, which started about 2pm.

Ayub said, despite the flood, no evacuation centres were opened.

"The authorities have opened the boom gate at the river as part of efforts to mitigate the flood water. This has improved the flood situation in the affected areas," said Ayub.

He said the situation will be monitored and updated from time to time.
