Make up artist and designer share their experiences during Johor royal wedding

KUALA LUMPUR: Never in her wildest imagination did make-up artist Saidatulnisa Aminuddin think that she would be chosen to be part of Johor princess Tunku Tun Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah Sultan Ibrahim’s wedding, recently.

Saidatulnisa, who is the sister of Malaysian rock queen Ella, first met Tunku Aminah when the princess was 17. She was called on to make up the princess for an interview with a publication.

She once again worked her magic on Monday, for the princess’ wedding to Dutchman Dennis Muhammad Abdullah.

“When I found out I was selected to do her make-up for her big day, I could not help but feel proud and appreciated,” she said when contacted today.

She said during a make-up trial, Tunku Aminah had expressed her intention to use her services.

“However, at that time the decision was pending approval from her father, Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar.

“Alhamdulillah, Sultan Ibrahim later granted his approval and everything went smoothly on her big day,” she said.

Sharing her experience, Saidatulnisa said the princess had expressed her wish for a natural look.

“She is beautiful even without make-up and needed just a little touch to enhance her beauty,” said Saildatulnisa, whose clients include members of royalty, VVIPs, celebrities and brides.

For the solemnisation, she played with natural and earth-toned colours to create a flawless yet elegant look.

“As for the bersanding, Tunku Aminah again requested for natural make-up but with a touch of glitter,” she said.

Her elegant touch had earned praises from netizens including from overseas.

Meanwhile, Teluk Belanga Design owner Jamil Sukaimi was pleased when Tunku Aminah selected him to prepare four Baju Melayu Teluk Belanga, widely recognised as Johor's traditional attire since the 19th Century, to be worn by the groom for the wedding.

“I was assigned to prepare his outfits for the solemnisation, bersanding, royal bathing ceremony and visit to the Mahmoodiah Royal Mausoleum,” he said.

He said he had prepared eight outfits for Dennis, with the colours selected by Tunku Aminah, before it was presented to Sultan Ibrahim.

“Sultan Ibrahim personally handpicked four outfits, which Dennis wore during all four ceremonies,” he said.

He said for the solemnisation, Dennis wore a Baju Melayu Teluk Belanga in pearl white made from wool satin from Italy.

“As for the bersanding and bathing ceremonies, the material was kain tenun Pahang for a more classic look,” he said, adding that it took him about two months to produce the outfits.

Jamil said he first started making outfits for Dennis, born Dennis Verbaas, after the Dutch-born converted to Islam on May 31, 2015.

“I made his outfits for him to go for prayers and religious lessons as well as for events held at the palace,” he said, adding that his regular customers included other members of the Johor Royal household, VVIPs and politicians.
