Illegal foreigner falls from 5th floor apartment fleeing cops; breaks nose, arm

PETALING JAYA: A Nigerian man incurred a broken nose and arm in his attempt to flee from authorities during an operation against illegal immigrants in Damansara Perdana here last night.

The man, in his 30s, tried to evade the raiding team by climbing off the balcony of a fifth-floor apartment in the area. He managed to cling to an Astro satellite dish in the hopes of not being spotted, but it failed to accommodate his weight and came lose from the wall, causing him to lose his grip and fall five storeys to the ground.

The raiding team immediately apprehended the man, and checks revealed that he did not possess valid documentation. He was later taken to the Sungai Buloh Hospital for treatment.

The Nigerian was one of 51 people arrested during the operation, codenamed ‘Ops Black Flora’, conducted by the police in a joint-effort with the Immigration Department and the Petaling Jaya City Council.

Selangor police Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Fadzil Ahmat said 171 foreigners from various countries residing at the apartment building were checked.

“A total of 43 men and 8 women were detained for failing to produce valid documentation. They comprised 37 Nigerians, two Bangladeshis, two Nepalis, and one each from Kenya, Uganda, Indonesia and Thailand.

“Action will be taken (against them) under the Immigration Act,” he said when met after the operation.

Police also conducted urine tests on the detainees, and 10 foreigners tested positive for drug consumption as of midnight.

The four-hour operation, which started at 7pm, saw the raiding team entering 70 apartment units and three shops which they had identified as homes for some of the foreigners.

A total of 44 police officers and 368 rank-and-file personnel from various units, including the Criminal Investigation Department and Air Wing, were deployed.
