Penang floods: Relief centres shelter almost 3,000 evacuees since yesterday evening

GEORGE TOWN: A total of 51 relief centres have been opened since 7.30pm yesterday at all five districts, State Secretary Datuk Seri Farizan Darus said.

He said that 2,861 people were evacuated to 25 centres in Seberang Perai Tengah, 18 in Seberang Perai Utara and one in Seberang Perai Selatan.

“Some of them were also taken to four relief centres in the southwest and another three in the northeast of Penang island.

“About 850 personnel from various agencies, including 170 from the armed forces were deployed to the affected areas throughout the state.”

Farizan said distribution of aid in certain areas were hindered by fallen trees and debris on the road.

“Food items have been distributed to the relief centres, but we are facing minor issues due to obstructed roads. The aid may not reach the victims as quickly as we had hoped for,” he told in Press conference today.

He said that the deployed personnel would also prioritise carrying out cleaning exercise at schools to ensure the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination would not be disrupted.

Farizan added he is in contact with the Meteorological Department to monitor rainfall and wind patterns surrounding the state.
